Mineral Carbonation Roadmap: A Roadmap to Decarbonise Western Australia Through Integrated Mineral Carbonation

The Challenge

Increasing the rate of direct air capture and the rate of reaction via mineral carbonation could enable cost effective, rapid, large-scale CO₂ sequestration.

The widespread, industrial-scale utilisation of mineral carbonation has enormous potential to sequester Western Australia’s CO₂ emissions but is inhibited by technological and economic challenges.

Proposed Solution

Curtin University was engaged to develop a roadmap for adopting mineral carbonation as a large-scale CO₂ capture and sequestration process.

To achieve this overall objective four key themes underpinned this project:

1. Science and Technology
2. Economic Viability
3. Social and Environmental
4. Policy and Regulatory

This Roadmap sets out a coordinated program of work to enable accelerated ex-situ mineral carbonation in Western Australia.

This Roadmap highlights a viable plan to deliver an ex-situ mineral carbonation industry in Western Australia. which has the potential to lock up carbon emissions on a gigatonne scale.
