Ecohydrological characterisation of the natural and rehabilitation ecosystems at Newcrest’s Telfer Gold Mine
Project Overview
Project Number
M0381
Total Grant Value
$650,000
Program Area
MRIWA Contribution
$200,000
Project Theme
Sustainable Land Use Post-mining
Project Period
2007 - 2009
Summary
The program was carried out in the context of the design and management of large waste-rock dumps in arid ecosystems, in particular in the Great Sandy Desert, where Newcrest’s Telfer Gold mine operates.
Engineered post-mining landscapes are not only required to be restored to a near natural ecosystem function, but also to prevent contaminant and sediment off-site movement from rock-dumps and tailings storage facilities.
Keywords: waste-rock dumps, arid ecosystems, contaminant and sediment off-site movement
