Using indicator minerals to support Ni exploration in WA
MRIWA project (M10426) aims to define distinctive trace element signatures revealing undiscovered NiS mineralisation in WA.
High-grade nickel bodies represent only small targets within potentially mineralised regions, and traditional technology used in exploring for them is both expensive and may miss important clues to mineralisation.
By identifying consistent chemical markers present in different minerals found around known nickel mineralisation, the research team will deliver new insights to guide mineral exploration more effectively towards undiscovered ore bodies hidden beneath the surface.
Improving exploration efficiency may drive new nickel discoveries in the state, supporting continued WA’s global leadership in the production and export of nickel metal.
This project is being led by Margaux Le Vaillant and Louise Schoneveld at the CSIRO.
