The Challenge
In order to be more competitive and participate in the battery supply chain, it is important to be able to demonstrate and validate how Australian lithium-ion battery materials will perform as individual components and when combined in a full cell, to be able to provide representative electrochemical data to validate the performance and quality of these materials.
The Solution
Establishment of a facility for fabricating and electrochemically testing standard lithium-ion battery cells from materials developed in Australia to validate the performance and quality of these materials for producers, and create an accessible database capturing improvements to the battery cell materials for developers.
By providing the necessary infrastructure for validation and iterative development of key Li-ion battery precursor chemicals and materials would enable domestic control of the processes and associated information.
Proposed Benefit to WA
Timely feedback on purity requirements for raw materials as well as material performance data will ensure WA producers are able to meet battery-grade specifications.
The performance data will allow WA producers to optimise commercially competitive characteristics and assist WA to market its minerals to increase global market share and procure preferred supplier status.
